Note taking and Note making as oral discussion at a meeting or lecture.
TASK.
Or
Note making is the process of taking down important information from spoken
texts such as lectures, speeches or other learning opportunity in order to
review and remember the information later.
Or
Note taking is the passive process which is done at lectures whereas note
making is more active and focused activity where assimilate all information and
make sense of it for yourself.
OBJECTIVES OF NOTE TAKING.
To
review past lesson regularly, Note taking lead the person to review past lesson
regularly since the taken note can be used as reference in one way or another.
To
recite (repeating key concepts from class), Note taking have a positive impact
on student learning, not surprisingly the preponderance of studies confirm that
students recall more lecture material if they record in their notes.
To
reflect, Note taking lead the person to connect class ideas and other sources
or readings.
PRINCIPLE OF NOTE TAKING
Jean
(1959) introduces the principle of Note taking as follows.
Note
the idea, not the word, writing down what you understood in your own words, not
what you heard. This will help in recalling and increase the understanding on
your own.
The
rules of abbreviation, if you have time write the word a
completely as possible however if a word must be abbreviated then write some of
the first and last letter rather than trying to write as many latter from the
start onwards.
Example: statistics – stics
Main hall – Mh
Mwtara 8 – Mtr 8
Links,
the part of any speech that is both the most important and the most difficult
to note is the sequence of ideas and the links between them. Use the some sets
of simplified notations for recurrent linking words of similar meaning
Example: as – This is because or this is
why
Tho
– although
The
most of the relationship between “entities” and/or propositions can be
expressed by the,&, /. Symbols may be used them creatively =, ≥, ≠, ≤.
Negation
and emphasis, these are two essential element of any
speech and as such should be noted unambiguously.
Example: It was agreed – OK or Okd
It was not agreed – ok
It was not agreed – no ok
The study is interesting – intg
The study is very interesting – intg
Verticality
and shift.
Verticality
means taking notes from the top to bottom rather than left to right. This
method make it possible to :-
a)
Group ideas logically, allowing a
complete and immediate synthesis when we come to read back our notes.
b)
To do away with many links this would
otherwise be essential to the clarity of the text.
Shift
means writing notes in the place on lower line where they would have appeared
that the text on the line above been repeated.
IMPORTANCE OF NOTE TAKING
It
is essential for providing you with the necessary evidence to inform and
develop your argument.
It
assists you in concentrating on and understanding the information you are
reading by helping you to summarize the ideas and arguments in the text.
It
allows you to focus on the points relevant to your purpose.
Taking
notes forces one to listen carefully and test his/her understanding of the
material.
Personal
notes are usually easier to remember than the text.
Notes
developed using an active and critical approach will also allow you to retrieve
your argument before you begin writing.
NOTE MAKING
Note
making is the more active and focused activities where you assimilate all
information and make sense of it for yourself.
Note
making is the process of review connecting and synthesizing ideas from your
lectures or reading which contain guidance and activities that will help you to
reflect on your current approach to taking and making notes and suggestion for
how to make your notes more meaningful and useful.
