African American literature is the body of literature produced in the United States by writers of African descent.Among the themes and issues explored in African American literature are the role of African Americans within the larger American society, African-American culture, racism, slavery, and equality. Andrews, W., F. Foster, and T. Harris(1979) Literature of the Caribbean is exceptional, both in language and subject. More than a million and a half Africans, along with many Indians and South Asians, were brought to the Caribbean between the 15th and 19th centuries. (James Arnold, 2001)
The following are the relationship between African American literature and Caribbean literature.
Both use of theme of freedom and independence, African-American studies including African speaks to the deeper meaning of the African-American presence in this nation. This presence has always been a test case of the nation's claims to freedom and democracy to the Black people in the America also in Caribbean island Black people they struggle to fight for their freedom because they need to be free thus why some Black people where use songs that makes to occur of literature because songs used to fight for their freedom but some Black writing their biography about their life. For example Frederick Douglass write his story life.
Both oral culture is rich in poetry, including spirituals, African American gospel music, blues and rap this oral poetry also shows up in the African American tradition of Christian sermons which make use of deliberate repetition, cadence and alliteration. African American literature especially written poetry but also prose has a strong tradition of incorporating all of these forms of oral poetry, (Jay, 1997).
Both Caribbean and African American literature explores the issues of equality, which were long denied to Black people in the United States along with further themes such as African American culture, racism, religion, slavery, and a sense of home among others.
Both influenced by great African diasporic, Is  heritage and in turn influenced African diasporic writings in many countries African American literature exists within the larger realm of post-colonial literature even though scholars draw a distinctive line between the two by stating that African American literature differs from most post-colonial literature in that it is written by members of a minority community who reside within a nation of vast wealth and economic power.
Both influenced by slavery, because during that time in American and Caribbean colonialist depends on use of slaves in plantation, but in Caribbean were use red Indian were so weakness and lazy makes whites to take Black people and sending in Caribbean because African where strong and powerful people. Due to that makes of some people to during the work use songs as to because wants to be free also some gain Education and write about the story of his life due to that situation similar to American  because involved with slaves in all aspects of life
