INTRODUCTION
Literary theory refers to the tools or instrument of interpreting literary works or the capacity to generalize about phenomena and to develop concepts that forms the basis for the interpretation and analysis in this instance for “literary” theory.
 Literary Criticism refers to close reading, explication and evaluation of a work of art. This includes the classification by genre, analysis of structure and judgment of values.
The following are the relationship between literary theory and literary criticism   
    In order to be a good critic, you may need to understand different theoretical interpretation of the literary work. For this reason many modern critics use theory in evaluating a literary works. So you will find that the term criticism and theory are often used interchangeable. Amalag  
    Literary theory and criticism provides the knowledge of the structure of any literary word (General poetics ).Within the scope of history ,Historical poetics investigate the development of artistic structure and their element such as genres, plot and stylistic images, also it may be applied in criticism in the strict sense .
Literary theory and criticism help the readers or learners to use theory to better understand the work and be in the better position to criticize or judge the works. This is because theory has become so prevalence in literary studies, Theoretical concern often accompany  a critical evaluation .And in that sense one is doing theory and criticism are two necessary linked .
Literary criticism and literary theory give the meaning and values to an author’s works .It is important to every writer to understand literary criticism and interpretation so that he can improve the way he communicate directly or indirectly .For example historical criticism and Marxist criticism.
To rephrase you apply a literary theory to a work of literature in order to analyze it (perform criticism );literary theory abound ;reader response which concerned with how the work is viewed by the audiences, in this approach the readers create meaning note the author or the work, also feminist ,formalist  as well as traditional criticism and new criticism .
Literary theory is what sometimes used when one is analyzing a work of literary criticism ,also help to understand what is important  about the text ,in its structure, its context (social, economical and historical ) and what is written in the text  and how the text manipulated the readers or learners .
At the same time, any time you do a “close reading of work, you are using literary theory to perform literary criticism so as to know the weakness of the that works .Example formalism theory has the advantage of forcing the writers to evaluate a work on its own term and Marxist is based on social and economic theories that is middle class exploit the working class.
Conclusion
Thus, in the definition of literary criticism there is the word  “explication” due to this we cannot apply theory without criticism such as historical, stylistic ,new criticism, Marxist and traditional criticism.
