INTRODUCTION
Counseling
is a learning process in which a counselor helps an individual or individuals learn,
understand themselves and their environment and be in a position to choose the
right type of behaviors that will help them develop, grow, progress, ascend,
mature and step up, educationally, vocationally and socio personally, Ebizie E.
Nkechi ( 2016)
Guidance
and counseling is an important educational tool in shaping the orientation in a
child from negative ideas that is planted in the child by his/her peers. Hence
the need school for the counselor to assist the child in molding their future
through counseling therapy. The school counselor is seen as a role model and
highly respected by students. The counselors by their training are expected to
be friends with the school child, listen to the child’s complains, short
comings and proffer guidance to the child in a quest of molding the child in
the right part to take in their life pursuit.
Egbo
(2013) stated that “the total development of a child can only take place in an
environment conducive for teaching and learning”. It is in realization of the
above that all educational services which can promote teaching and learning in
schools are given prominent attention by educational planners. Counseling
services are among the school educational services. It is believed that
guidance and counseling services in school shall develop, assess and improve
educational programmers; enhance teaching and improve the competence of the
teacher and reduce cost for the children.
Streghts guidance and counseling according

Counseling
and guidance can present a good basis for a broader education for life.
It can be used as psychoanalysis for persons with specific personal problems,
or it can be the foundation of a more general life skills training programmer for the student who, though not suffering from
any particular problem, should be assisted in building up his/her personal
resources in order to cope effectively with their future lives .
Guidance
and counseling service in schools is to assist the student in fulfilling his /
her basic physiological needs, understanding themselves and
developing associations with peers, balancing between permissiveness and
controls in the school setting, realizing successful achievement, and providing
opportunities to gain independence.
Guidance
and counseling program is to bring about the maximum development and
self-realization of human potential for the benefit of the individual and
society .School counsellor is concerned with facilitating
the optimum development of students. This program is supposed to develop the
learner’s intellectual abilities, develop a balanced personality and to have complete
person intellectually, spiritually, morally and socially. Guidance and
counseling programme is therefore aimed at assisting students to harmonize
their abilities, interests and values, thereby enabling them to develop their
potential fully. Self-knowledge helps one to formulate life goals and plans
which are realistic
It is the role of guidance and
counseling programme to provide the students with the necessary information
about the courses availability and the qualifications required for each course
In schools, there is need for students to make proper subject and career
choices after the four-year course in the Universities, Six education programs
in both Primary and Secondary as it relates to Nigeria education system.. Such
information will assist students develop realistic self-concept according to
their academic capabilities.
It intercepting and assisting
disadvantaged students and also checks on school drop-out.
Counsellor is to help students who are experiencing difficulties. Students from
disadvantaged families of the society have many problems and needs which, are
to be dealt with in guidance and counselling programme. Students may experience
difficulty in adjustment with peers, teachers and the environment thus guidance
programme helps such students to adjust and utilize the guidance facilities
available fully. Majority of the disadvantaged students later acquire low
qualifications for the world of work.
To
make individual conscious of his or her inherit potential, talents and
capabilities. This ensures that guidance play a great role so as to discover
the skills of an individual and hi capabilities to solve life challenges and
dynamic that surrounding human being. It adhere the way in which someone use
brain to think and give advice to the client about the certain matter that he
or she suffer, (Kinra 2008).
Guidance
and counseling help the person to make correct interpretation of the facts of
the given situation, This means that guidance and counseling acts a vehicle that give a compass to life dynamics
and challenges hat need to be solved by a counselor and being appreciated by a
counselee, (Kinra 2008).
WEAKNESS OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING
OF THE BOOK
Guidance and counseling lacks
implication in school to the students since in school taking the information in
all student or pupils needs research about the certain matter so as to be
familiar with that problem encounter,
Guidance
and counseling the counselor is usually perceived as someone who performs magic
to change the client, and also as a rival in the societal or institutional system.
In other words, from all indications, guidance activities are seen as negating
virtues held tenaciously within the cultural setting.
Guidance and counseling is very
limited since thus it involves professional criteria a like intelligence and
interests and other ways that many counselors they not involve all of them when
giving advice about the certain matter,
Consider
most of the individuals as normal persons, according to this principle the
majority of the persons seeking guidance and counseling should be considered as
normal persons and it should be ensured that every normal or abnormal person
may take advantage from guidance. Often this thinking develops that the service
should be given to those persons only who are in some problem. It is not true
that the guidance program is only for problematic clients.
Guidance and counseling is
associated to be used only is school, This fact that guidance and counseling is
a very good profession that must be applicable in many, places like hospital,
church, home, market and other place but always it is implicated in hospital
and school to the students only so as to prepare them to be successful in life,
CONCLUSION
Guidance
and counseling plays an role of in schools for the child future success of the
child. The study recognizes the fact that counseling is a transformative
process of helping people to learn all that are to be learnt both in and
outside the School. Guidance and counseling is very wide profession that needs
counselor to be honest, respectful also to be sympathy about the matter aroused
by a client example problems like poverty, betrayal, love issues hence they
acts as guideline or a compass direction to a client in which he or she must
follow so as to escape from that problem encountered to his or her life
