Guidance
Introduction
Guidance
is an aspect of educational programme which is concerned especially with
helping the pupils to become adjusted to her present situation and to plan his
future in line with her interest, ability and social needs (Mujibu, 2008).
The
role of guidance counselor at school is to work both students and in
conjunction other school staff as a part of whole school approaches to guidance
(Mujibu, 2008).
Strengths of the book
His
book is arranged and organized well in terms of chapters that help an
individual to gain knowledge easily because someone wants to read something
concerns with either guidance or counseling he or she will get it faster
without being confused. For example when someone wants to gain knowledge about
effective personal guidance he/ she go directly to chapter two page numbers 48
and read it (Mujibu, 2008).
Also
author explains the function of guidance services; that will help an individual
to know how guidance is important in real life and encouraged to find different
guiders and counselors so as to allow those functions to function among them.
This is experienced on the book Guidance and Counseling written by (Mujibu,
2008).
The
book also shows the role of teachers in guidance like to help student in making
the possible adjustment to a current situation in the home and community and to
assist students in the problem of cancer planning educational programming and
direction towards long term personal aims and values as a result many students
reaches their goals (Mujibu, 2008).
Also
the author explains on the principles of educational guidance; such as every
aspect person’s complex personality patterns constitutes a significant factor
of his total displayed attitudes and form of behavior and parents and teachers
have a guidance appointed responsibilities (Mujibu, 2008).
The
book also show us on how, where and when to get school counseling services
whereby it helps students to develop appropriate social skills and refer
student to outside sources for tradition assistance, also it has been suggested
that the overall function of the school counselors remains the same regardless
of what level that’s primary level or secondary level (Mujibu, 2008).
Also
the book shows the reference or sources where we can get more knowledge about
guidance and counseling as a service to those who needs to be counseled. For
example page number 184 of the book shows the reference as follows Hall, Scott
E; Rueth, Thomas W. counselors in the classroom; A Developmental Approach o
Student Wellbeing, NASSP Bulletin, January 1999, pg. 27-33 (Malibu, pg.
183-184.
Author
also explains on the modern methods of delivering career information such as
computerized job listing, job scan, career fairs, job market films, job finding
clubs, local cable televisions, interactive video and automated career
selection tools this may help career to get a job that help him or her to get
something for survive (Mujibu, 2008).
Weaknesses of the book
Author
failed to explain how guidance and counseling are conducted at least by taking
even a single country or continent as a case study and tell us how we can learn
from reality as a result we study still study his book without a real evidences
and examples.
Also
the book does not explain what kind of goals will be reached by an individual after
being guided and counseled even we know that there is three common categories
of goals that’s immediate goals, longer-range goals, and process goals so after
reading the whole book we cannot expect to reach any goals among of these
three.
Also
author does not explain source of indiscipline in the society that needs
intensive guidance and counseling so as to change and to travel in right way
and these indiscipline are not explained so as to make a society aware about
problems.
Also
this book is based much explaining roles of guidance and counseling to school
environments and forget that there are other organizations and group that needs
a service of guidance and counseling. For instance on page number 173 the
author explains on school counseling services and on page number 176 he
explains on benefits of school counseling (Mujibu, 2008).
Also
author does not explains counseling methods that will guide a counselor to
counsel a client well even the stages that used in counseling process so for
that case the book guide a counselor to counsel randomly as he or she wants
(Mujibu, 2008).
Conclusion
Guidance
and counseling are two terms that are related and work together but they differ
in one way or another although both aimed at solving problems of the client whereby
the participation of both and the experts should be there.
