ABSTRACT
The study of the impact of the use of Smartphone in academic
performance in higher learning institution is important for all learners and
other users of mobile phone. Although there are increasing advantages of
Smartphone in learning through Mobile learning still some students do not use
Smartphone effectively for learning. The study specifically investigated
various contribution of Smartphone in academic performance in high learning
institution. Furthermore, it determined numerous challenges of using smart
mobile phone academic performance in learning institution and recommended the
various ways of solving the challenges of using smart mobile no in academic
performance in high learning institution.
A survey was done and primary data were conducted from 60
students (respondents) belonging to Stella Marius University College in Mtwara
region.
The result indicates that many students (75%) in high
learning institution own Smartphone in their years of study and they have
enough experiences in using them. However, many of them use Smartphone outside
the campus rather than in classroom or library. Respondents face various
challenges while using their Smartphone for learning such as economic and
social inequality with regard to access, to use of, or impact of information
and commutation Technologies (digital divide), attitudes toward M –learning in
high learning especially bin Stella Marius University College and lack of
technological support for M-learning in Tanzania.
In the other manner the study focuses on describing the
relationship between the using of smart phone and the performance of the
students in high learning institution as smart phones are as an important
things in academic learning as improve students learning materials,
expanding students educational
experiences, essential in academic works, easy in communication and easy to
access the learning materials.
Also the study focused on discussing the challenges students
in using smart in academic activities such as economic barries, lack of
internet connectivity, lack of knowledge of using smartphone, lack of technical
support and m- learning curriculum interpretation, ineadeqaute of support and
institution policies and integrated pedagogy
The findings of the study also depicted in analysing the
solutions for the problem facing students in using smart phones in accademic
performance in higher institution as

University compounds, the presence of technical support and maintenance of
information, education provision to the users, M learning should be introduced
in the University, the institution should be covered with the policies of using
smart phone in accademic learnings
The study provided the recommendation to high learning
institution in Tanzania to provide technically support to students in order to
allow them to use M- Learning effectively including provision of training and
guidance to higher learning students on effective use of Smartphone especially
for learning purpose and to encourage higher learning students in Tanzania to
adopt and use various new technology for learning purposes.
