INTRODUCTION
Linguistic is the study of language and its structure including the study of grammar, syntax and phonetic also linguistics specify branches such as social linguistics dialectology ,psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, comparative linguistics and structural linguistics (Bynon, 1997).
Generally Linguistics refers to scientific study of language. Linguistics is an important as a source of historical information as involves analyzing language form, language meaning and language in context. The earliest activities in the documentation and description of language have been attributed in 16th century-BC India Grammarian Panini who wrote a formal description of the Sanskrit language. Linguistics can be explained as a source of history through the following,
Linguistics is used as a pointer for early civilization; this is used to explain that linguistics is a source of history because it is used as an important pointer that helps to understand early civilization. This is done as historians use lexical analysis to interpret the mode of civilization attained. For example dog was an important animal in the life of Indo- European and the reason behind was that in all daughter languages of Indo- European the word “dog” was present and had the same form in sound and meaning level.
Linguistics as a tool of drawing migration Maps, this also is used to explain that linguistics is a source of history. And this because linguistics as a tool in analyzing language resemblance. Through linguistics the history of migration depicts a clear picture of how a group of people moved from the original dialect or language. Linguistics as a source of historical information explained resemblance as caused by common origin of languages, where languages which are said to belong to the same ancestor tend to look alike at sound and meaning level. For example Romans languages like Italian, Romanian, French, Portuguese, Spanish, are all descendants of Latin.
A tool in examining various cultural aspects, also this shows that linguistics is a source of history examines different cultural aspects. And again, historians have using linguistics data in establishing the origin of a certain cultural practices that is important to a certain culture. A good example can be taken from the Italians who had a great influence on music and most of musical terms such as Piano, Guitar and Moderato which have their origin in Italy.Also, in the history of education and scholarship Greek had much influence, this is experienced in the etymology of most words relating to education, schooling and academics with linguistics terms like Philosophy, Biology, Sociology, Psychology etc as used in the field of Education.


Linguistics as a tool to establish origin of any ethnic group, Linguistics is used as a source of history as used to determine the origin of a particular language group. Normal language determines the origin of people through accent and this is done by language reconstruction technique. Even though linguistics helps to determine which ethnic group belong to a particular language. For example, language used to determine that the origin of Bantu speaking people is the Niger Congo Basin. And also in Nigeria those who speak a certain group of language are grouped into Yoruba or Igbo ethnic group and that is due to history of language.
Linguistics establishes links among the people, Linguistics is important because it helps to establish the linkages that have existed among the peoples of the continent of Africa and the entire globe over the years. Many methods are used to establish this but chief among them is the identification of common words in the languages of the people of the world
Linguistics is used to confirm oral sources, the is shows the way linguistics is regarded as source of history as used in confirming oral sources. Normally the tradition of almost every tribe is rich with information about the origin of people. Some of these pieces of information are embedded in the language of the people. Under such situations linguistics is used as a source of history as confirm what is found in the oral traditions of the people.
Determines external influences on people, Linguistics is considered as important to the study of African history because it exposes the external influences that have been brought to bear on the people. In many parts of Africa, the language of the former colonial masters has found their ways into the local languages of the locals. This goes to shed light on the various external influences on the people of Africa
Identify the origin of languages It has been amply established that languages have origins. It is one of the reasons why linguistics is important to the study of African history. Linguistics is important because it helps to trace the origin of various languages on the continent of Africa
Generally linguistics is considered as a source of history because is used to identify the origins of languages. And this because linguistics traces the origin of various language on the continent. And this is done by linguist in studying language features used by different people in various parts of the world.
