1.2  Statement of the Problem

Despite the Women play important role in income generating activities, the rates of in women’s participation in income generating activities compared to man is low which make the women to be behind the line of income equality between them compared to men for instance Between 1995 and 2015, the global female labor force participation rate decreased from 52.4 to 49.6 per cent. The corresponding figures for men are 79.9 and 76.1 per cent, respectively. Worldwide, the chances for women to participate in the labor market remain almost 27 percentage points lower than those for men (United Nations, 2014). Women’s lower participation rates translate into fewer income generating opportunities, with little variation over time, which negatively affects women’s earning capacity and economic security. Many of the economic gains made by women in industrially developed countries since the 1960s are in danger of being eroded, which seems to be in part a result of the restructuring of both the global and the domestic economies. This trend is part of an economic restructuring shift away in income generating activities among the women are largely consisted of subsistence and small-scale activities. However, many participating women in income generating activities remain poor with little gain from their participation in income gaining that are more likely to consist little gain.

However women in Mtwara region as one involved much in income generating activities as compared with men but women still remain poor as compared with men also the women suffer from different problem which undermine their fully participation in income generating activities the major problem that discourage the women to participate in fully participation in income generating activities in their multiple role in the society. Women participation in income generating activities in Mtwara Mikindani Municipality play the great role in income generating activities that has stimulated the regional development for example about 60 percent of women in Mtwara Mikindani Municipality as compared with men who use their time in drinking also women face  barriers and disincentives for women to participate in the income generating activities in particular when it is accompanied by wage and income gaps, therefore consider moving towards a more neutral tax-benefit system that does not create disincentives to work for one of the household’s earners (URT, 2010). For substantive gender equality at work to be achieved, it is essential that societies recognize that both women and men should have a right and responsibility to work and care. The governments should put forward a set of integrated policy measures, informed by international labor standards, to recognize the role of women in income generating activities in order to reduce and redistribute it between women and men, women should also be valued and remunerated according to their core role for the maintenance, prosperity and well-being of societies. Therefore women are in indispensable precondition for the realization of a sustainable development that leaves no one behind and ensures that the future of work is decent work.
