Theories explain colonization in Africa
Colonize is to settle in, and take control of, land
outside your own borders. Usually, a large, powerful country colonizes a
territory or area that's much less powerful. There were four theories which
explain why Africa was colonized. These theories are
(a)
Psychological theory
These described by non human forces towards the
imperial expansion. It classified into
(i)
Social dimension
Which supported by Charles Darwin survival for the
fittest. Which mean the Europeans as strong nation should dominate the weak
nation which is Africa.
(ii)
Evangelical Christianity
Was done by missionaries, the aim was to prepare
Africa for colonization, so Africans brain washing and should accept the
colonial imposition and not allowed to question.
(iii)
social atavism
Imperialism means natural desire of man to dominate
fellows.
(b)
Diplomatic theory
It categories into
(i)
National prestige
If the nation has many colonies than other was felt
prestigious and superior to other Europeans nations.
(ii)
Balance of power
After sime European nations to attain her independence
those power for nations supposed to leave their fellow Europeans and find
another weak nations to dominate so they come to Africa.
(iii)
Strategic reasons
The availability of strategic areas like Niger river,
Congo basin, and areas with high population which can be good for the market
like Uganda.
(c)
Economic theory
It divided into five categories
(i) Raw materials for their industries
(ii) Area for investment
(iii) Area for settlement
(iv) market for their goods
(v) cheap labor
(d) African dimension theory
They explained the abolition of slave trade in
relation of legitimate trade. They came to Africa in order to abolish a slave
trade which was against human rights.
